Biography

Edvīns Raups, born in 1962, is a Latvian poet and translator from Spanish and Portuguese. He has contributed largely to the introduction of some of the most influential authors of Latin American tradition, such as Cortázar, Borges, Paz, etc., into Latvian literature, and his translations have left a notable impact on the latest generations of Latvian poets and writers. Raups entered the Latvian literary scene with his original poems in 1991 with his collection of poems No Wind ― with surprising metaphors, ans fresh approach, informed by his wide knowledge in variety of world's literary traditions, he, along with his contemporaries re-defined the poetics in Latvia. From discussing wider social, and often politicised topics, poetic movements shifted towards personal introspection and subjective, often intimate detail, creation that is truly one's own. The prominent literary critic Guntis Berelis explains: “It is as if Raups from the offset, with his first book, had marked the horizon of his poetics, and is now in a continuous search of the ideal language in this territory”. His poetry and translations have been awarded various important prizes and awards in Latvia, and, in 2010, the Canadian Guernica Editions put in print Edvīns Raups' book of poetry in English Then Touch Me Here.
