Anna Rancāne

Anna Rancāne, born in 1959, is a Latvian poet. She writes both in literary Latvian and her native East-Latvian, Latgalian language. Her first literary publications appeared in 1975. She graduated with a degree in  economy from the University of Latvia (1977—1982), and attended The Maxim Gorky Literature Institute in Moscow (1983—1988). Between 1986 and 1989, she worked as an editor for the Liesma publishing house. From 1989 until 2000, she ran the literary department at the Daugavpils Theatre, and later worked as a regional correspondent for Diena newspaper. In 2016, the National Theatre staged Anna Rancāne's play Bišumāte un vilkacis/Mother Bee and the Werewolf, which discusses the reality of living in a border-town in Latgale, Eastern Latvia, and the effects of history on the current situation and social stratification. Her work has received both regional, and national acclaim, and several awards.
