Margherita Carbonaro

Margherita Carbonaro was born in Milan, Italy, in a family with mixed background, Italian and Latvian. She studied Italian Philology and Literature at Milan State University.

She has been working for  many years in publishing, both as an editor and as a translator from German and English – and presently also from Latvian – for some of Italy’s most prestigious publishing houses. She has translated, among others, works by significant authors such as Thomas Mann, Herta Müller, Max Frisch. From Latvian she has translated so far Zigmunds Skujiņš’s novel Miesas krāsas domino (Come tessere di un domino, Iperborea, Milano 2017), Nora Ikstena’s Mātes piens (Il latte della madre, Voland, Roma 2018), Regīna Ezera’s Aka (Il pozzo, Iperborea, Milano 2019).

In 2018 she received the Sudraba tintnīca prize for her translations from Latvian.

After having lived for several years in Berlin and Beijing, she lives currently in Italy and Southern Germany, but loves Riga and Latvia and tries to be there as frequently as she can.
