Biography

Jurgis Algimantas Banevičius was born in 1942. A cellist, he has devoted most of his life to music. After graduating from Jāzeps Vītols Latvian Academy of Music (known previously as the State Conservatory) he worked in various symphony and chamber orchestras and ensembles, including the Latvian Philharmonic Chamber Orchestra and the Lithuanian Philharmonic Ensemble. Banevičius has always been interested in translation, and for several years has been working as a translator into Lithuanian. In 2014, his first translated book was published – the memoirs of  the renowned Latvian film critic and author Valentīna Freimane, Adieu, Atlantis (published in Lithuanian as Sudiev, Atlantida! by "Versme"). His second translation – a historical novel wrote by Eva Martuža titled "Peter's Vow" is soon to be published by the Lithuanian Writers' Union Publishers. Banevičius has translated numerous short stories and fragments by Latvian writers that have been published in periodicals, such as "Metai" and " Literatūra ir menas".
